Explore more →The beans go into your grinder, get ground, get dosed into the portafilter. The lever of the Flair NEO comes down, and you feel the resistance, the steady give, before the espresso runs from the spout — dark, syrupy, with a creamy crown. And you didn't have to dial in your grind size to the millimetre for that to happen.
That's the idea behind the Flow Control 2 Portafilter. The restrictive outlet regulates the flow of water through the puck. That's where the pressure comes from that a clean espresso extraction needs — even when the grind isn't finely dialled in. Even with pre-ground coffee. Even when your grinder isn't really built for espresso.
The original Flow-Control technology launched in 2020 with the Flair NEO. It worked — but the outlet was fixed in place, which made cleaning harder. With intensive use, the restriction opening could clog over time.
The second generation solves this with a removable Spout: unscrew the outlet, clean it separately, put it back in. The result: consistent performance over time, because nothing clogs up. With proper care the spouts last a long time — and if one gets damaged, replacement packs are available.
Espresso comes from the interplay of pressure, temperature, time and grind size. With classic bottomless portafilters, the grind has to be fine enough for the coffee itself to build enough resistance. A grinder that doesn't grind fine enough for espresso — or pre-ground coffee — otherwise produces a shot that's far too fast and thin.
The Flow Control 2 takes over part of that resistance through mechanical restriction. The water takes longer to flow through the puck. Contact time increases. Pressure builds. Aromatic compounds dissolve, crema forms, the shot gets dense.
Our opinion is one of many: for most people using a Flair NEO or Classic at home or on the go, the Flow Control 2 is the more straightforward setup. With a good hand grinder like the Comandante, you can eventually switch to a bottomless portafilter and make the grind itself extraction-ready. Until then, and also for mobile use with pre-ground coffee, Flow Control is the simpler solution.

Removable Spout. The key upgrade over the predecessor: the outlet can be taken off for thorough cleaning, treated with cleaning agent, or swapped for a replacement if needed.
Builds pressure without a finely dialled-in grind. The restriction creates the counter-pressure that the coffee puck would otherwise have to build up on its own. That means the portafilter also works with grinders that don't reach the fine espresso range.
Pre-ground coffee works too. On the road, in a hotel, while travelling — when there's no grinder around, the Flow Control 2 lets you pull a drinkable espresso even with good pre-ground coffee.
Optional stainless steel dispersion screen. Spreads the water more evenly across the puck. One version comes with the screen, one without — if you already have one, you save.
Compact for travel. Like the whole Flair NEO, the Flow Control 2 is mobile too. It fits into your existing setup without adding weight.
For everyone using a Flair NEO, NEO Flex, Classic or Signature who wants an uncomplicated way into espresso without a finely dialled-in grinder. For everyone who's mobile and works with different grinds — travelling, at the office, in a camper. For everyone who wants a second brew head alongside the bottomless portafilter, to pull several shots in a row faster.
If you run a Flair 58, 58+ or 58+2: the Flow Control 2 doesn't fit. Those models have 58 mm industry-standard portafilters. Take a look at the matching accessories in our Flair Espresso Collection.
A grinder makes the biggest difference — even with Flow Control. For everyone looking for an affordable and precise hand grinder for on the go: the Comandante hand grinders. If you're after an electric grinder for home: the Varia coffee grinders affordable, the Weber Workshops EG-1 at the upper end.
To care for your Flair setup: cleaning agents and tools are in the cleaning collection. If you're after a tamper, WDT tools or puck prep: affordable from the Normcore Collection, at the upper end from Weber Workshops.
And the coffee itself — our coffee beans from our own roastery in Bern, delivered in 2 to 4 business days across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein.
The Flow Control 2 is compatible with the Flair NEO, NEO Flex, Classic and Signature, as long as they were made after November 2017. It does NOT fit the Flair 58, 58+ and 58+2 — these have 58 mm industry-standard portafilters. If you're unsure, write to us at office@coffeecoachingclub.pro, we'll check compatibility.
A bottomless portafilter has no restriction at the outlet. The espresso flows straight out of the puck, and it takes a grinder that grinds fine enough for the pressure to build up in the puck itself. The Flow Control 2 takes over that resistance mechanically — in exchange, the shot isn't visible directly. Both have their place. Many Flair users own both portafilters.
Yes. That's one of the main reasons for Flow Control. Pre-ground coffee is usually not fine enough for a classic espresso. The restriction on the Flow Control 2 mechanically builds up the missing pressure. Sure: freshly ground coffee tastes better. But on the road, Flow Control plus pre-ground is a workable solution.
The stainless steel dispersion screen spreads the hot water more evenly across the puck and reduces channeling. It's included from the factory on most Flair models. If you already have one, the version without a screen is enough. If you're buying the portafilter as a second brew head or as a replacement, the version with the screen is worth it.
Knock out the puck after every shot, rinse the portafilter under hot water, dry it with a cloth. About every one to two weeks — depending on how often you use it — unscrew the Spout and clean it thoroughly. That way the restriction stays consistent over time.
Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich-Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) we show the whole Flair range, including accessories. As the exclusive Swiss importer of Flair Espresso, we carry the complete lineup.
From the roastery: for the Flair with Flow Control 2 we like the dense, full-bodied profiles. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight deliver the chocolatey, nutty notes that harmonise especially well with the Flair pressure profile. If you're after maximum body: Very Nutty. If you're after a fruity profile: Wild Peach, lively and a discovery for the curious. That's our recommendation, one of many.
